Workshop on Experimental Methods
SWATI OBEROI, Doctoral Student, IIM Shillong
The workshop was great to understand the concepts which are critical to experimental design. Since preparation is important to experiments, the workshop was very useful. However, the analysis of data collected in an experiment is something most research struggle with. Data analysis did not get enough attention in the workshop. I suggest a follow up workshop which deals mainly with data analysis in experiments.
ALEENA IILYAZ, Doctoral Students, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
Instructor is very approachable which I appreciate. For future workshops, one day for simulation exercise can be assigned. It will give participants hands-on experience using the learnings.
About the Workshop:
The workshop was held from December 3-5, 2021 [3pm – 6:30pm on December 3 and 4, 9am-1pm on December 5] via online medium (through Zoom).
Focus of the Workshop:
The aim of this workshop was to offer necessary understanding as well as confidence to start doing experimental research. This workshop was useful to faculty, doctoral students and aspiring Ph.D. candidates who are interested in experimental research. The purpose of this workshop was to provide technical skills for the design and implementation of experimental methods, the techniques and discussion are relevant for any experimental research in social science/behavioral studies. The assignment is oriented towards getting the candidates to conceptualize and design a simple experiment and then analyze the results from the study.
Upon the completion of this workshop, the participants would learn:
1. Gain familiarity with fundamentals of experimental methods.
2. Get introduced to various experiment designs.
3. Learn the basic concepts of operationalization of variables and manipulation checks.
4. Learn how to avoid biases in experiments.
5. Develop familiarity with sample size determination, statistical power, effect size and experimental data analysis.
